Recall Wednesday: Ventus Ltd™ /Ventus Team™ Bicycle Aerobars, DuraTech Anchor Plate w/Damper & DuraChimney II Anchor Plate w/Damper, Evenflo Top-of-Stair™ Plus Wood Gates, sweatshirts & more

Below are the CPSC recalls that I have received since Wednesday, March 24, 2010.  Guess what? Yet MORE sweatshirts with drawstrings being recalled.  {rolling my eyes} Additionally, Burlington Coat Factory seems to be the leader of the pack on retailers who attempt to sell this illegal item.
In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines(pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled in the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts. Be sure to check old hand-me-downs for this!

Whole Foods, the one with the shopping cart!

I’m thinking most kids love toy stores, right?  Not in this house.  I can’t say that she doesn’t love them.  We honestly haven’t really been in one all that often.  (We had an unfortunate incident happen at our local toy store a few years ago and we haven’t step foot inside since then.)  However, one place my little Isa has gone PLENTY of times to is the grocery store.  She LOVES Publix, primarily because they give kids free cookies in the bakery.  Too bad the moms aren’t offered free wine – I’d be there every day!
Lately though, she has an obsession with Whole Foods.  We have two to choose from – the one with the elevator and the one with the shopping cart.  That’s how she distinguishes them!  Yesterday we headed to the one with the shopping cart after picking up our …

Are you kidding me?  At noon, on a Friday, let’s park the tractor trailer in the NO LOADING/FIRE LANE of a ridiculously congested parking lot!  Why am I surprised to see this in South Florida?  I shouldn’t be!

Snoozing in the Booster – stiff neck?

Snoozing in the Booster – stiff neck?

I remember how ecstatic we were when we could ditch the “pain the butt to buckle” car seat and start using the booster instead.  What a relief!  I gained minutes back a day, since she could do everything, minus buckle herself.  She could climb in, she could unbuckle and climb out.  Now, I was warned that long trips may create some stiff necks.  What?  Well, here is what the warning must of have meant:
Well, these are the moments that I miss the car seat – the seat that allowed a little more head support.
I felt so bad, we were en route to the hotel after a long day.  It was less than 45 seconds (I timed it) and she was out. Look at her!  Passed out like a college kid after a keg party. Her head slumped over with even a little drooling. I tried to readjust her, but within …

I was given the opportunity to try out Scent of a Name, a unique personalized perfume.  Recently my munchkin Isabella was my product tester.  Enjoy the video of Isabella and her doll getting all perfumed up!

But, there is one thing, beyond her goodie-bag sized Hello Kitty perfume, that has been missing until now in her princess vanity – her very own personalized perfume!  For just $7 this roll-on perfume is a just what the little princess in your kingdom needs!!

Fishies, fishies, I want fishies!

Fishies, fishies, I want fishies!

Heading back to the hotel from Magic Kingdom, I sat with Isa passed out on my lap, next to a mommy and her 2 year old little girl who seemed delirious and exhausted.  With the clock quickly approaching midnight, the reason was obvious.  My nosy ears heard the little one ask her mom, “Fishies?” Obviously, asking for some goldfish.  The mother, in a sweet kind voice, responded, “No, sweetie.  We are out of food. You ate all the fishies.”  Less than 20 seconds later, the little girl once again asks, “Fishies?”, with her voice getting a little whinier.  The mommy once again responds in a sweet, patient voice.  Again, now maybe 10 seconds later, “Fishies?” Mommy’s voice changed quickly.  I chuckled in my head (did I just use the word chuckle?!) hearing the mommy respond the way I wanted to.  “No, there are no fishies.  Stop asking for fishies.” Within the next …

Disney in a Weekend! Planning a Weekend Disney Getaway!

Disney in a Weekend! Planning a Weekend Disney Getaway!

What a weekend!  Spent three great nights with family in Disney World.  Yes, we travel to Disney A LOT! We actually went 6 times just in 2009!  It sounds a bit excessive, don’t you think?  There are lots of reasons for our repetitive WDW getaways.  First and foremost, we were given season passes last year – thank you mom & dad.  We obviously felt the need to go and make good use of the passes.  Secondly, we live in South Florida, so a weekend trip to Disneyworld (3 1/2 hours driving) equates to DC – NYC trip that I have done a-million-times!  So with passes, an easy drive, and a toddler/preschooler how can we go wrong?
We budget our trips.  Sometimes we have a tight budget (yes, one time we went and only spent $100 in 3 days! Impressive!) and sometimes we get a little more carefree (we’ve stayed at all “monorail” …

Recall Wedesday: hooded sweatshirt, Therma Scarf scarves, Children’s Metal Charm Bracelets, Coil Nailers, Fluke VoltAlert® Voltage Detector & more!

Below are the CPSC recalls that I have received since Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Please promise me that if you ever design sweatshirts for children, you will NOTinclude a drawstring around the neck!  The most common recalls issued by the CPSC  are clothing items that pose a strangulation hazard to children.  It seems so obvious to me, yet every week we see more and more items recalled.  Makes me proud of the CPSC for catching the items, but super frustrated with the designers and distributors for creating such safety hazards for children.  Can you tell I’m annoyed?
In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines(pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled in the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts. Kids with scissors, not a good combo!

Yes, a Smart Mama would NEVER leave a child alone with scissors.
Yes, I have TOTALLY learned my lesson.
THANKFULLY my daughter’s jammies are “hurt” not her little fingers!

Minnie Mouse Pez – Meds for the knee?

Yes, the imagination is full force in this house, and it better be in yours too!
As I whined to my 3 year old that my knee was hurting (I’ve had 2 major knee surgeries in the last 2 years) she told me, “I have the right medicine, don’t worry.” Intrigued by my Dr. Little One, I asked her for some.  She brought me over a Minnie Mouse Pez container and explained, “Now just hold it there until it beeps and then the knee will be all better.”  It reminded me of how I give her her underarm thermometer.  Well, I held it there, and honestly, for a few seconds I felt like I was getting medicated, sort of like having an ice pack on my knee.  No more than 10 seconds later she started beeping, my daughter, not Minnie.  She explained, “You have 47, which is very hot. …

Grilled Eggplant

Yummy! I love eggplant.  One of my favorite dishes is eggplant parmesan.  That’s a recipe for another day.  Here is a simple way to make eggplant and keep the calories in check.
Grilled Eggplant – ala George Forman
Ingredients

1 large eggplant
1/2 cup of olive oil
3 large cloves of garlic minced

In a small saucepan, heat olive oil medium-low heat for 3-5 minutes until hot.   Add garlic.  Simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Meanwhile, peel and slice eggplant into 1/2 inches slices.  When olive oil is ready, brush both sides of eggplant slice with oil.  Grill on indoor grill for 8 minutes (flipping half way if not using a George Foreman.) Season with salt and pepper. Enjoy!

Recall Wednesday: Boys’ Hooded Jackets & Sweatshirts, Children’s Bangels, Outdoor Lighting Fixtures, & Roman Shades

Below are the CPSC recalls that I have received since Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Once again I’m seeing recalls for hooded sweatshirts. Childrens’ hooded sweatshirts are frequently recalled due to drawstrings around the neck. The drawstring poses a tremendous strangulation risk to children.
In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines(pdf) (which were incorporated into an industry voluntary standard in 1997) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled in the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts. Hide & Seek – in the car!

On the way to school Isa wanted to play hide and seek. What?  How do you play hide and seek in a car when everyone is wearing their seat belts?  Look:

That’s how!  She asked me to count to ten and I shouted, “Ready or not here I come!”  Using my right hand I started feeling around living up to her imagination that she was really hiding.  She giggled.  I giggled.  At the 1st red light I finally “found her!”  It was great!  Keep using that Smart Mama imagination!  It’s the best!

Color Wonder, I bow to you.

Oh, why do I love Color Wonder???  Let’s just say that the dining room table and chair
would look much different than they did tonight when I found Isabella “making a picture” when I was cooking.  I thought she was coloring and when she suddenly mentions that the “painting” was looking great!  Surprise, surprise, I FREAKED knowing she was sitting in the dining room, quickly envisioning the colors of the rainbow decorating my table, chairs and floor.  Before the true freak out I made a HUGE sigh when I realized she was painting with Crayola Color Wonder!!!
If you don’t have Color Wonder in your home with children, stop reading this and go out and buy it! It will save your sanity, I swear, when the painters are making their masterpieces. Color Wonder is a “magical”  clear paint that does not make any marks on anything but the special Color Wonder paper.
