Product Review of Otterbox

I experienced a true #FAIL this week!  Look at my phone!

Yes, the thought to be indestructible Otterbox that was to keep my iPhone safe from falls and children, didn’t do its job!  Frustrating!  Last night I was carrying the phone upstairs and lost grip of it and down it went.  I saw it land and immediately recognized the cracked appearance and a tear went down my face!  This phone had sustained my daughter’s not so careful approaching to playing with the phone, the sticky fingers of kids and much, much more.  Why did this final drop end it all?  I was so bummed.  But then, ding ding ding, I remembered something about a warranty with Otterbox.  Something that guarantee their device.  I went to bed last night thinking that just a quick call to the company with my receipt in hand, would get me the new screen I now need.

Ha Ha Ha!  When I went to go find their number today I came across this warranty information:
OtterBox products come with a ONE (1) YEAR Limited Warranty from the date of the retail purchase by the original end-user. If a material or workmanship defect arises and a valid claim is received within the Warranty Period, OtterBox will replace the case only. OtterBox cannot be held liable for damages to personal property due to misuse or improper care and maintenance of case and o-ring seals. OtterBox warranty does not, under any circumstance, cover the replacement or cost of any electronic device or personal property inside or outside of the case.

So essentially if their product fails, and your phone breaks, your phone is still broken but you can get a new Otterbox.  Doesn’t make sense.  I guess it does when looking at the business side of Otterbox.  They aren’t going to want to shell out $100 for new iPhone screens every time THEIR PRODUCT FAILS!  All they need to do is shell out a now overpriced plastic cover that probably costs them nickels to the user.  It stinks!

Ok, I’m off my soap box now and am researching how to fix the screen. Any advice?  I’m sure I’m not the only one who has been there, done that!

  1. Oh how terrible! On one hand, this could be a great excuse to upgrade to the iPhone 4 but infuriating that this happened! I know you can get glass on iPads replaced…Wonder if it would be worth the cost of replacing iPhone glass or if it might be better to get a new one. Sigh. I’m so sorry this happened!

    1. I really want to upgrade but in May is when we get the upgrade opp. that helps with the price. I was thinking of just getting the screen replaced like you mentioned with the iPad. I even found something that I could do to replace it from home. Not sure how much I trust my ability with that one. Thanks for you advice Tech Savvy Mama!

  2. I couldn’t find a date on this post, so I’m not sure how far back i’m replying to, but here goes:

There are plenty of youtube videos that show you how to replace this yourself. I bought the parts and replaced the glass on a broken droid for a friend of mine, total cost: $30, including tools and the new screen protector. bought parts, screen protector, and tools from amazon.com vendors.

  3. I can tell you didn’t have the OtterBox on the phone, there is no way you could have broken the screen that bad with the case on it. And didn’t you pay attention to the details when you bought the phone…Apple does not warranty broken IPhone screens. You can replace the whole unit for $200.

    1. As unlikely as it may seem, I actually did have the Otterbox on the phone. The phone drop from the landing of the 2nd floor to the 1st floor. I was able to bring it to a local phone tech shop and they replaced the screen for under $100.

      1. The whole back of my phone shattered too and it fell flat! I am so confused how that happened. Very disappointed with this product now.

        1. Yeah, I have an Otterbox and my screen just cracked as well as the digitizer. So they can break even with an Otterbox. With that said, I’m more than pleased with the protection it gives me.

  4. Had the same thing happen to mine WITH the Otterbox case ON (and mine didn’t even fall that far). It happens, trust me!

  5. Strange enough I dropped my phone while standing and it only fell at most 4.5 feet. I had the defender series otter box on mine at the time. When I picked it up I was relieved to see that the screen was fine. That was until I took my case off a few days later to plug in my speakers… The back of my phone was shattered! How could this happen? I bought the best case they offered, and the front screen was okay, how did the back break???

  6. Same thing happened to me except mine fell from my pocket to the floor. Apple offered to replace it for $200. I had just shelled out $200 for the phone + $40 for the otterbox and 4 months later they want me to pay another $200. I know some people feel that’s not apple’s fault that I dropped my phone, but whatever happened to good craftsmen ship? My old phone without a case was dropped too many times to count, the worst it had on it was a scratch on the corner. I had that phone for 2 years and used it everyday. I wish I had researched more instead of following all the other sheep to the apple store

  7. You really think they should guarantee your phone? WTF. They sell a case that will protect it against some falls, not making unrealistic claims of making your phone indescructable.

The exact angle of the fall is as important as the height. Only so much they can do to absorb.

  8. Awesome review! I had been wondering whether it is truely worth spending the money on a phone case or whether it was just a gimmick but I definitely got everything I needed from your post! thanks so much for sharing, keep up the awesome posts!
