Parents & Their Smartphone, You May Be Surprised and Even Giggle with this Data!

How attached are you to your iPhone, Droid or other smartphone? It’s second on my list, after my kids of course, of things I freak out if I can’t find!  We all know that Candyland comes before Twitter, but it’s tough some times.

Our smartphones provide immediate access to information that long ago was in big encyclopedias near the card catalog at the library.  The information would be as up-to-date as its publishing date. With the advent of smartphone technology we want quick access to the latest information and we want it NOW not just what it was 15 years ago when the hardcover book was printed.

A recent survey released by Cozi, the No. 1 online and mobile family calendar and organizer, details smartphone use in families.  I’m sure it isn’t a big surprise that moms use their phones differently than dads.
Some findings of the survey, based on data from nearly 2,000 parents, states:

  • People in the Mountain West claim Facebook is their top smartphone activity – the only region to make that claim
  • Moms are twice as likely as dads (48% vs. 24%) to use their smartphones for recipes
  • Nearly half of parents (49% of dads, 45% of moms) shop via smartphone
  • Families agree on their favorite apps: Facebook, Pandora and Angry Birds are in the top five for moms, dads and kids
  • More than half (52%) of school-aged kids now have a smartphone or handheld mobile device
  • 8% of moms, and 6% of dads, spend more than 5 hours a day on their smartphones

What do you think?  Is your family in line with the survey results?

  1. I typically use less than 2GB per month. The only time that I use a lot is when I stream Netflix movies through the phone network.

  2. It can be said that every parent must have a smartphone to be in touch with the latest technology and also be in touch with whats happening around with the news and updates. But I feel it would not be too good to hand these gadgets to children at a very young age.
