Smart Home: How and Why to Establish School Time Routine BEFORE the 1st Day

Tomorrow is the big day.  The day I’ve been waiting for.  I can’t believe it’s actually here.  Am I ready?  Are they ready?

What is the big day you ask?  It’s the first day that we are practicing our “back to school” routine!  Tonight lights were out at 7.  Clothes are set out.  Breakfast bowl and glass are out.  Alarm is set for 5:30 for me.  And most importantly coffee pot is set.

I’m going to spend these last days before the 1st day of school (August 22nd)to prepare my daughter for her new school time schedule.  This year is a big year for her.  She’s switching from a somewhat informal preschool that began at 8:30 to a school she’ll attend for

Dr. Seuss’ Birthday Celebration – How to Celebrate!

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!  Yes, Dr. Seuss’ Birthday is approaching; it’s actually tomorrow, March 2nd!  What does that mean to you?  For some of you, not much!  But for many, especially you Smart Mamas, it means another excuse to read with your child!  Dr. Seuss has grown to be the mentor of many authors, particularly those in the kids section.  His writing style and art have made his books classics from nearly the start.  We’ve all enjoyed stories such as Green Eggs and Ham and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish .   They are books with rhyme, books with a great beat and often a cute, silly storyline! Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday (it would be his 107th) can be done in many different ways!  It could be as simple as reading an extra book before bedtime, a Dr. …

Smart Home: Double the Math Lesson Making Zucchini Strips!

I wanted to make these delicious sounding zucchini strips I saw on SkinnyTaste.com.  It was a rainy Wednesday afternoon. My daughter had been in school all morning and then refused to nap. You know the kind of day I’m talking about.  She wanted to “help” me in the kitchen. I figured why not. It was a good way to use up some of her energy!
It was a great recipe, a very easy recipe, a very kid friendly recipe. Measuring breadcrumbs. Measuring cheese. Cracking open an egg.  I did take over when it was time to separate the egg white!  That was it.  She took the zucchini strips that I had cut and dipped them into the egg white, dropped them into the breadcrumb bag, shook the bag and carefully placed them on the baking sheet.  She loved it. We baked them and ate them. …

Smart Home: School Time

A Notebook and a Pencil
Dedicate time (it can even be just 5 minutes) to review academic skills with your child every day.  This “school time” will encourage you to be on top of your child’s learning successes and areas of need.  With just a notebook, a pencil and a few other items, a Smart Mama and her offspring can review handwriting, counting, reading and more!
How Does It Look Like in Smart Mama’s House
Each day we spend 15 minutes doing “School Time.” This is a special part of the day when we settle down to practice a few different academic skills.  We typically begin with the calendar.  We talk about the current month, days of the week and count the number of days in the month. We often look back in the year, reviewing names of previous months and look ahead at what’s to come. She gets to draw an …
