We expected a lot and were pleased.

The Key Largo Conch House on Overseas Highway in Key Largo (MM 100.3), comes recommended by nearly every online guide of the Florida Keys.  It was even fortunate to be reviewed by both the Food Network and The Washington Post, giving it lots to gloat about.  It is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner from 7 AM – 10 PM.

We arrived around noon on a Sunday, and weren’t surprised to wait around 10 minutes for a table. The scenery is beautiful.  The restaurant is in an old home tucked behind some local greenery.  There were around 7 or so tables inside, with around the same number outside along the wraparound porch.  The patio area was being used for a private party, and would sit around 30.

Remembering that we were in the Florida Keys, we expected a “laid back” (Keys term for SLOW) service and that’s what we got.  Everyone was pleasant but it just seemed to take forever.  Our waitress arrived about 5 minutes after we sat, and it took another 5 minutes until she returned with our water and was ready to take our order.

The menu was full of great sounding sandwiches, salads, soups and wraps.  Seafood was intertwined into nearly all items.  The most raved dishes are the lobster bisque, conch chowder and the fish tacos.

Not surprisingly, we opted for the lobster bisque, the fish tacos with Yellowtail, the crab cake panini and chicken tenders for my daughter.  The bisque came first.  Wow! The lobster was minced and the taste was unbelievable.   My husband and I nearly licked the bowl and were delighted when my daughter didn’t want to try it – more for us!

Our main entrees arrived 10 minutes later (a full 30 since we 1st sat down.) My tacos tasted good.  Just 2 came on the plate with a side of tortilla chips.  A rather small serving for what we’re accustomed to these days.  I finished my plate feeling satisfied but not overstuffed.  Just right.

My husband’s panini was great to my taste buds but he didn’t really care for the chipotle type sauce already spread across the bread.  The crab cake itself was very good.  (Note: We lived in Maryland for more than 10 years and consider ourselves rather knowledgeable on the taste of a good crabcake ;-))

My daughter’s chicken tenders were actually remarkably good.  The breading was light and had a fish fry taste. Yum.  The homemade chips that were in the basket were also delicious.

While no kid coloring placemats or crayons are given, the ambiance of the restaurant makes it more bearable for little ones.  Romeo, a talking parrot, sits on the patio and  provided a few minutes of entertainment too!

I certainly recommend the Key Largo Conch House to families traveling through the Florida Keys.

Smart Tips for Key Largo Conch House

  • Try going on non-peak hours to avoid a potential wait.  It’s “Food Network” popularity makes it a common stop for many tourists and locals from the mainland.
  • Be sure to have your bag of tricks for entertainment (crayons, coloring books…) in case of a very laid back wait.
  • The brunch menu receives lots of positive reviews, so consider a Sunday brunch.
