Smart Food: 4th of July, Celebrating Independence and Menu ideas!

"American Flag"It’s nearly the 4th of July. I can’t believe it! What does the 4th of July mean to you?  A reason to BBQ, head to the beach and enjoy a day off?  That’s the answer for many of us.  Let’s try to remember on this 4th, the reason we celebrate – our independence!  The parties, fireworks and more are all in tribute to our successful independence from Great Britain.  Our fight continues overseas as our servicemen and women risk their own lives in the name of freedom!  This 4th before heading to the BBQ or the beach, think about those men & women.  Consider having the kids make some handmade cards to send over to the troops, thanking them for what they do each day for us.

Now, let’s get onto the yummy foods we all love during the summer BBQ season.  At your party, be a Smart Mama and spend more time catching up with friends by skipping the grill and serving Barbeque Blue Sandwiches (http://www.hormelfoodsrecipes.com/recipes/details/5519/bbq-blue-sandwiches.aspx).  The sandwiches make my mouth water just reading the ingredients!

On the side, next to the traditional potato salad and coleslaw, try serving Applewood Bacon Spinach Salad

(http://www.hormelfoodsrecipes.com/recipes/details/1705/applewood-bacon-spinach-salad.aspx). It’s an easy one to make and is a hit in this home!

For dessert, watermelon slices, popsicles and of course a Flag Cake!

Have you ever made it?  Start by making a standard cake (it doesn’t matter if it’s yellow, white or chocolate.) Cover with cool whip or white icing – your choice.  Use strawberry halves and blueberries to form the flag.  It’s a great activity for the kids.  My daughter LOVES to organize the strawberries to be “just right!”

So, what’s on your 4th of July menu?  Have a recipe you want to share? Post a comment with your favorite summer BBQ treat!  Let me know if you would like to be a guest poster by sharing your recipe in an upcoming post.
