I completed a Hot Yoga class at Barkan Method in Ft. Lauderdale and it kicked my sweaty butt, big time.
My first yoga class was back in 2001. I was 26 and in better shape than I am now. That first class kicked my butt, too. I remember being in shock as these “older” women could stretch & twist their bodies in ways I didn’t know possible. I left that class giggling with my friend, we were horrible yogis. We went back the next week and continued to every week, even twice a week at times, for the next year. That 1st yoga class in ways changed my life. Beyond going to Power Yoga with Bess, I was then encouraged to go to the gym a few other days a week and totally revamp what I was eating. I lost over 30 lbs that year.
Last fall I started up with yoga again, until my silly ankle injury (see video about why I know longer wear 5 inch wedges.) Now I’m ready to become a yogi, once again! I look forward to the improvements in my health most importantly!
Hot Yoga at Barkan Method
This week I was invited to try out a Hot Yoga class at Barkan Method in Ft. Lauderdale, in the Union Planters Plaza. I had never done Hot Yoga, and to be honest, I was a bit intimidated.
In Barkan Method the thermostat is set to 95 so, yes, you sweat like crazy. Our very cute instructor Matt led the class of 20 students through a variety of poses,
many most which were very advanced for me. I tried my best and felt sweat dripping out of pores I didn’t even know existed on my body.
The half-hour class was far more intense than any yoga I had taken. When I walked out of the studio I was exhausted but felt really, really good. Today my body was sore and I was thirsty. But the best part, is that I am eager to do it again!
Hot Yoga & More at Union Planters Plaza
The Union Planters Plaza is a shopping center with a developing reputation of healthy living – Whole Foods, Dick Sporting Goods and now Barkan Method are a few of their shops. They also have some great dining options, including d.b.a. cafe which we were invited to enjoy after Hot Yoga. d.b.a is a locally owned restaurant with fantastic – I speak from experience – food. Their menu is changed regularly and contains many healthy & delicious options. There are loads of micro beers on tap and the owner is a fun, young witty former teacher who is creative with its design and special events.
Connecting On & Offline
I hope I’ve encouraged you to learn more about The Barkan Method, Union Planters Plaza or d.b.a. Cafe. My invited experience was truly wonderful and I wouldn’t share it here with you if I didn’t believe it might be great for you!
