Last month, as we prepared (packed, packed and packed) for the big move, I kept thinking of 3 things I needed to get done before the family stepped foot into the home – paint, get the pool fence ready and get two outdoor ceiling fans! These three things needed to get done BEFORE the move – one for safety (pool fence) and the other for sheer ease of having it done without the family running around!
Here’s how and why I got them all done:
- Paint! Thankfully the seller had great taste and the walls were all in colors I liked. However, I wanted the girls’ room and playroom to get a fresh coat of paint because I know what nonsense it would be to try to do that AFTER we move in. No, thanks I’m not going to even dare. I bought the paint and had the rooms painted!
- Pool Fence! This one is pretty obvious. With more backyard pool drownings in Florida than any other state, having your pool properly fenced is a MUST. I called Baby Guard, the leading pool fence company and set the appointment for the install STAT.
- Outdoor Ceiling Fan!
Moving into a new home in Miami, in the midst of the hottest summer on record, I knew outdoor ceiling fans were a must. In our new home I was certain that we would spend loads of time outside. We have a great covered terrace that we could set up one of our patio tables. We also have a small outdoor sofa set that would be great for entertaining. What we didn’t have and needed was outdoor ceiling fans to keep us “cool” and help keep away to bugs. Based on several visits before the official closing, I knew the measurements for the outdoor area.
As a very BUSY smart mama, I headed online to 1800Lighting.com to see what they had available. 1800Lighting.com is the online component to Capitol Lighting. You can read here how I was utterly impressed with the store in Boca Raton last spring. Their inventory on and offline is remarkable. Their prices are the best out there as they have a 110% price guarantee!
In my PJs while the baby took her morning nap, I began my outdoor ceiling fan shopping experience. I was hooked – I spent nearly an hour drooling over the styles, finishes and accessories available at 1800Lighting.com. My very indecisive self was getting nowhere trying to decide between the several fans that fit the dimensions, color and style that we wanted. I waited for Tom to get home that night to help. Within seconds he pointed out his favorite, which ironically was my favorite, too! We selected a Feiss Monte Carlo outdoor fan in an Old Chicago finish and Distressed Pine blades.
The Monte Carlo fan as we opened up the box! I was so eager to see it put together!
The fans arrived in a few days (quick and FREE shipping!) and I was able to have our handyman (my husband was way to busy with other moving stuff) to install them the day after closing. Watching Luis install them, I realized that I may have been able to install them myself. Yes, it “looked” that easy!
It’s been just over 2 weeks since the big moving day and I am thrilled with the paint job, the pool fence and my 2 stunning ceiling fans. Late afternoon barbecues are planned and we will surely enjoy every component of the house – especially the pool!
By the way, my 5 year old was peeking over my shoulder when I browsed around 1800Lighting.com and she has already picked out the chandelier that she must have in her room! It is really cute. Might cave and order it online soon!

Disclosure: A gift card was provided by 1800Lighting.com/Capitol Lighting to complete my purchase. The entire experience is mine, including all opinions.

WOW… that is a beautiful backyard! I am totally jealous.
We don’t need outside fans much here in Michigan.. really if you just wait 5 minutes the weather changes! Right now… you have to wear jeans & a sweatshirt!
