I’m going to make money from my mom’s vintage peignoir! First off, I’m sure you’re wondering what on earth is a peignoir!?
According to Wikipedia, “A peignoir (pronounced: [pɛ.ɲwaːʁ]) is a long outer garment for women which is frequently sheer and made of chiffon or other translucent fabrics. The word comes from French peigner, to comb the hair (from Latin pectināre, from pecten, pectin-, comb) describing a garment worn while brushing ones hair, originally referring to a dressing gown or bathrobe.
Very high-end peignoirs were occasionally sold with sheer long gloves and stockings made of the same material as the peignoir itself for wear to bed or on occasions where the wearer would be seen in her nightclothes; such as visiting or while sharing accommodations during travel. Contemporary peignoirs are usually sold with matching nightgown, negligee or panties.”
This peignoir, for as long as I can remember, hung at the back of my mother’s closet. It was given to her in the early 1970s from my grandmother, who had purchased it possibly at a consignment shop. It was traditional to have one for your wedding night and even to wear at the hospital during your postpartum days. A bit fancy for my taste, but I do love the look!
This month we’re moving. Actually, this week we’re moving. I’m going through closets and cabinets and drawers. I’m also helping my mom since she’s moving, too. Alas the discovery of the peignoir! It’s beautiful, but not practical for me and my more common t-shirt and yoga pants that I wear postpartum. I know that a vintage loving, Mad Men obsessed collector would LOVE to add it to their closet. It’s not in “perfect” condition, as it has some age stains on the ribbon, but all sewing is still intact.
I began my listing using ebay Mobile. I hung the dress on a hanger and onto a chain link plant holder. With great sunlight coming in, I went crazy with photos. Remember photos are now FREE on ebay. I took photos of everything – the front, the back, the ribbon, the lace… My description took a bit more time since I didn’t know much about the style of clothing. I didn’t actually know it was called a peignoir at first. I did my research. I called my mom and asked her a million questions on what she remembered.
Tonight the listing goes live – I set it to start at 11:55 PM. There’s a reason for that, that I’ll explain on a future post. I’ll track the listing on My Ebay all week – I’ll certainly become a stalker.
Will the peignoir sell? I don’t know but I hope so. I think I priced it right, based on the completed sales I found on similar items. I’m offering free shipping for domestic purchases which tends to lure more buyers. I’m even opening the sale to the international market.
I will certainly share an update to the post with the outcome of the sale of the peignoir! Fingers crossed!
Do you have any vintage items in your home that could be sold to a vintage fanatic?
